Spring is just around the corner and what better way to celebrate then to go outside and shoot some photos! The springtime brings not only the hope of warmer weather but also some prime shooting time. It’s time to shake off the dust of winter and head outside with these must try photography ideas.
- Get up close and personal with the springtime flora
The abundance of rain gives way to freshly blooming flowers which make for great subject matter. Get up close with those macro lens and explore the details of the petals. Search for those brightly colored plants and shoot with a shallow depth of field to narrow your focus.
- Visit the Franklin Park Conservatory
If you’re strapped for time, you know you’ll always be able to get good shots at the conservatory. Not only will you get to explore their beautiful plant life but their amazing butterflies as well! Spend the afternoon walking the grounds of the park inside and out.
- Go on the Hunt for Wildlife
Where there is plant life there is local wildlife! Go in search for those secret areas where you can find birds, squirrels, amphibians and other little creatures. Make sure to bring your telephoto lens so you can get those up close photos with out scaring them away. You’ll need to make sure you have plenty of time and patience for this trip as wildlife can be hard to capture.
- Be an Early Riser
Not only can you capture some beautiful sunrise shots, but the dew on the grass and the birds in the trees, if you start your trek early enough. Typically you’ll be able to capture the wildlife as it begins its day especially the song birds. Plus, you’ll be able to catch the warm glow of the golden hour. Use a wide angle lens with a gradient filter for those bright sunrise shots.
- Capture the Misty Mornings
Early spring time mornings are perfect for shooting those enchanting foggy photos. Fog creates a sense of mystery and intrigue which sets the tone for your image. This is another one where you’ll have to get up early, use that wide angle lens, and head towards somewhere with a lot of humidity.
- Shoot Through a Lens Ball
Are you looking for a new way to bend light and create a wide angle look to your spring images? A lens ball may be just what you are looking for! Shooting through a lens ball gives a similar effect to that of a fish eye lens, but the images are upside down. If you are really handy at photoshop you can take a before shot with out the lens ball, and an after shot holding the lens ball. Take the two images, blend them in photoshop and remove your hand. The resulting image will look like magic!
- Sun Rays and Trees
During the spring trees are lush and green but still allow for some light to shine through. Find a near by patch of trees or forest and look for those areas where the sun is peaking through. The sun will create rays shining through the leaves resulting in some really beautiful imagery. Capture the rays using a wide angle lens.
- Search for Some Creepy Crawlies
This task may take you a bit of time as insects can be hard to spot and quick to disappear in to the foliage. However, utilizing a macro lens will allow you to get those detailed up close shots of our little friends without scaring them away. Insects come in a variety and shapes of size so there is no shortage of shots you can take.
- Chase Those Waterfalls
Springtime is known for its abundance of water, bringing our outdoor surroundings back to life. With the increase in rain, and the thawing of the snow, the waterfalls, lakes, and streams will be teeming with water. Get yourself a Neutral Density filter to slow down your shutter and smooth out the flowing water. Make sure to bring your tripod too!
